At the end of July, Matt and friends took on the Welsh 3000 Challenge, an unmarked route that covers 15 mountain peaks and reaching a staggering 3000ft in just 1 day.
As of today, the team have raised an almighty £2,000 which is 400% more than their original target! Which, no doubt, makes up for the aching knees and sore legs from climbing 15 peaks! If you’d like to support the team’s efforts you can do so here.
We asked Matt to write a few words about the challenge:
“Our Welsh 3000 challenge started way before sun rise and the route up to Snowdon was cool in the dark, the promise of sun rise at the top was quashed by some good low cloud and a bit of chilly Welsh drizzle. The route off the top and through the next 2 peaks including the notorious Crib Goch were in patchy cloud and on slippery rock but still an impressive knife edge of rock as we dropped below the cloud for some incredible views and down to our first check in at around 830am. 3 peaks done, 16km and 5 hours down.
The next section included a very long climb up from Nant Peris and then some rolling hills before one of the toughest sections of scrambling, scree and then up and down Tryfan mountain in the main mid day heat. We made it to our next check point on track at around 330, ate and drank as much as we could, got bitten by every insect in Wales and continued. 13 hours down, 8 peaks and 33km covered.
The final section had another tough climb up but very scenic, quiet and more remote and with the sun starting to drop the last few peaks were a bit closer to each other. The final and 15th peak eventually came at about 48km after 16hrs 30mins, with the sun setting we had some fantastic views. The end section back to the road and our lift home went on for ever on pretty tired feet! Final time was 18hrs, 54km and about 4000 metres of climbing. We had 2 sets of broken shoes, one near twisted ankle, some blisters and one of the team dropped after a gallant effort just past half way.
We were aiming for £500 but the support we have received has been incredible and we are currently over £1800. A special mention should go to True North Travel who work with Switch180 but also sponsored us £100 and British Airways who have promised to fun match £250 of sponsorship. Every donation makes the difference and it’s the quantity of individual donations that have meant our total has climbed.”
